Built Environment Studies BA ( Hons.)

The BA in Built Environment Studies at the Jindal School of Art and Architecture is a unique in the country three-year design program that is primarily based in a Liberal Arts Context. While this course prepares your architectural design sensibilities, it is geared to help you think and work beyond the confines of a traditional architectural practice into the area of urban studies, sustainable design, ecological and environment studies, social and spatial analytics, urban development, urban law and public policy, conservation and landscape design. Through courses in this program you learn about the fundamental of design as well as about law, policy, environmental issues, question of economics, technology, sustainability and urbanism all of which prepare you for joining the Built Environment Sector of the 21st century. Your “classrooms” are live cases and projects where you work with experts to learn how design, policy and law and go hand in hand to secure development that is just and equitable. You visit and intern in firms that work globally in areas of housing, urban development, community design and development, conservation and heritage management, landscape design, sustainable development to develop your own insights into the entire cross of people who work on the Built Environment. You also avail of many exchange opportunities with similar programs in some of the top schools of design globally.

At present, the Program offers three pathways that are available to students after a common foundation year. These are


Architectural Technology Pathway:

Architectural Technologists are key members of a project team who play a vital role in turning conceptual design ideas

into technical construction documents and practical, buildable solutions. This pathway provides you with the essential

knowledge base and fundamental skills required to work as an Architectural Technologist within the many companies

and sectors of the architectural and construction industry. Performing tasks of a technical nature, you will be part of a

team of professionals involved in the building design, construction and management process.

 

The Architectural Technology pathway prepares you to apply current practices of the Architectural, Engineering and

Construction (AEC) industry, including:

 Building Design

 Sustainability

 Building Codes and Regulations

 Building Science

 Construction Law and Contracts

 Technical Writing

 Specifications

 Cost Planning

 

Interior Architecture Pathway:

Interior Architects are key members shaping our built environment from the inside out. Their work is to create designs

that are both pleasing and functional and to ensure the quality and accuracy of completed structures. Interior architects

work with various structures and spaces, from residential to commercial or industrial. Interior Architects concern

themselves with the design of the spaces as well things.

 

The Interior Architecture pathway provides you with essential and fundamental skills to work within the design industry,

including:

 Building Design

 Space Design

 Sustainability

 Furniture Design

 Construction Techniques

 Costing and Specifications

 Lighting

 Adaptive Reuse

 Retrofitting

 Design Management

 Service Design

 

Urban Studies Pathway:

 

Urban Studies graduates are key member who shape, manage and develop our built environment, especially our cities,

towns, infrastructure, transportation networks and landscape. Their work is to create and develop designs, plans,

projects that are both pleasing and functional and work to develop our communities. Graduates work with various

structures, spaces, and systems from residential, transport, infrastructure and industrial.

 

The Urban Studies pathway provides you with essential and fundamental skills to work within the Development sector,

Building Industry, infrastructure and planning sector, including:

Course Structure


Eligibility

An aspiring student should have successfully passed the examination conducted by a Board/University at the +2 level of schooling (either through formal schooling for 12 years, or through open school system) or its equivalent with at least 65% marks in aggregate.

Applicants to the B.A. (Hons.) at JSAA must have successfully passed the examination at the 10+2 level of schooling or its equivalent.  This course is open to students from any stream including Arts, Commerce, Science etc. All applicants should fill the B.A. (Hons.) (Built Environment.) admissions form and register for mandatory Jindal Scholastic Aptitude Test (JSAT).

Applicants must take the JSAT conducted by Pearson VUE at various centres and obtain the requisite score. Candidates having valid scores in SAT/ACT are exempted from giving a JSAT score.

INR 3.5 Lakhs per annum
